Research

The main research areas

The ECOMM centre of excellence, under the direction of the chair of excellence, will pursue four main lines of research through the work of four post-docs and one engineer. These four areas will have in common a sustained use of bio-logging techniques.

Démographie et génétique des populations

Ecologie spatiale et energétique

Ecotoxicologie et écologie trophique

Interactions avec les activités humaines

Bio-logging: a central research tool

At the heart of ECOMM’s project is the development of new miniaturised electronic devices (bio-loggers), which will be placed on animals to explore their movements at sea and the environments around them. One of the objectives is to develop a sonar device small enough to be worn by marine animals to detect and characterise the prey they feed on. This information is essential because marine predators often dive in remote areas of the ocean where conventional surveys of prey fields (at-sea campaigns by research vessels) are impossible.
